Four Swedish mail hags, intended for America, Avere seized by the British authorities at Halifax. NEXT LIBERTY LOAN. Received 8.55. WASHINGTON, Sept 21. The next Liberty Loan campaign opens on October Ist. The issue will be from three to four billion dollars. GERMAN GOLD TO BRIBE CONGRESS. IN FAVOUR OF PEACE. Received 8.55. WASHINGTON, Sept 21. The State Department announces that Count Bernstorff in January requested the German Chancellor to send fifty thousand dollars to influence Congress in favour of peace.
TEXT OF BBRNSTOFF’S LETTER ATTEMPT TO GAIN IRISH INFLUENCE. Received 10.25 a.m. WASHINGTON Sept. 21. The State Department announces that Count Bernstoff sent the following message to Berne on January 22, 1917: —I request authority to pay up to 50,000 dollars in order, as on former occasions, to influence Congress through the organisation you know of, which perhaps can prevent war. I am beginning in the meantime to act accordingly. In the above circumstances a public official German declaration in favour of Ireland is highly desirable in order to gain the support of the Irish influences here.
