GERMANY'S TROUBLES.
A GERMAN DESERTER. PARIS, August 30. Rudolf Revcntlow, nephew of Count Revcntlow, deserted from, the Germans Rudolf was spending leave with his mother on the German side of Lake Constance. Both rowed to the Swiss shore in the night, a German patrol vainly pursuing them. TO GATHER HORSE CHESTNTJTS. AMSTERDAM, August 31. Plans are being elaborated in Germany to organise school children, in compliance with the Government's request, for the collection of the horse chestnut crop. Researches have proved that a ton of the chestnuts can satisfactorily replace half ,a ton of edible grain in certain munition processes.

LONDON, August 31. The Press Bureau reports: A proclamation prohibits the Imporation of bacon, hams or lard except under licenses enabling the Government to take over the whole of the imports and concentrate purchases in various countries into a single organisation. The Food Ministry is immediately establishing a buying agency in the United States. Food will he distributed through ordinary channels prices excluding unreasonable profits. Orders are being issued fixing the prices of cheese and butter.
