MEAT TRUST CONTROL.
STATEMENT BY PRIME MINISTER
The operations of the American Meat Trust in regard to New Zealand butter and cheese formed %he subject of a question put by Dr. A. K. M.P., in the House of Representatives/the hon. member asked the Prime Minister whether he had yet referred the invasion of the butter and cheese trade of the Dominion by the Meat Trust to the Meat Trust Committee now sitting. Mr. Massey replied that he saw noobjection to doing so. As a matter of fact, he did not think it would be necessary to refer the point to the committee, because he thought it was already covered by the order of reference, which covered the operations of the Meat Trust as a whole, without referring specially to Without anticipating the report of the committee 1 he might say that he thought that it would be necessary for the Government, at this end to control the export of meat, and the Imperial Government at the other end to control the imports of meat from New Zealand, and elsewhere, to prevent the exploitation of the producers and of the people as a whole.
