DENMARK'S PREPARATIONS.

COPENHAGEN, Jan. 17. At the opening of the Rittsdag, the Speech from the Throne said that the special preparedness of the land and sea forces must be maintained. Extraordinary measures were necessitated by an increase of the war operations in Swedish territorial waters.

The Budget was introduced. It includes five million sterling for the aiffiiy, two million for the navy, and two and a quarter million to relieve the dearness of living.

SUPPRESSION OF SMUGGLING. DENMARK TAKES A FIRM STAND. COPENHAGEN, Jan. 16. The Danish authorities are displaying great energy in punishing breaches of the law in regard to illegal trade with Germany. A merchant, for exporting 290 casks of train oil to Germany, was fined 253,000 kroner. His two assistants were fined 8000 kroner and 24,8000 kroner respectively.
