A SMUGGLER CAUGHT
A fireman off the s.s. Ruahinc, named George Webb, was charged at the Auckland Police Court with having smuggled one and a half dozen table knives, and being in possession of .‘>2 dozen table knives and ten and a half dozen butchers ’ knives. Webb pleaded guilty.
His Worship: What were you goin to do with them. Prisoner: Sell them. His Worship: Well, you are a prett; frank sort of a scoundrel.
Webb was convicted and fined th.
nominal minimum for smuggling, viz., £IOO, which his Worship reduced to £25, to which was added ISs costs. As the man had no effects on which to distrain for payment a default of twe months’ imprisonment was fixed, with a proviso that the man be returned t( the ship when she finally sailed from New Zealand, about a month hence.
