OBIUARY.
MR. ALFRED BARNES. The news of the death ,of Mr. Alfred Barnes, of Taoroa, came as a very great shock to the residents of this district, the deceased being very weltknown' and highly respected throughout the whole district. Mr. Barnes recently had a severe attack of influenza and entered Dr. Boyd’s hospital for treatment. On Saturday night his heart weakened and that was tne cause of death. Born in London 54 years ago, Mr. B'arnes Came to New Zealand with his parents when only two years of age, and lived at Onehunga. He was educated at the Church of England Grammar School in Parnell, and later joined the staff of the Bank of New Zealand at Wanganui. He served there, in Gisborne, and Hastings, and for some 18 years was the manager of the Bank at Hunterville. He afterwards accept. C(j a position as auctioneer with Abraham and Williams, Ltd., at Marton. During a period of financial depression Mr. Barnes voluntarily gave up his position to a maimed man and joined the staff of the same firm at Taihape. He took up a farm at Taoroa, and when Mr. Totman, of Taoroa, went for a trip to England he resign-
ed his position with Abraham and Williams, Ltd., in order to manage his own and Mr. Totman’s farm. Widely known throughout the Rangitikei district, deceased was a man who earned the love and respect of all with whom he came in contact. Of noble character, many looked upon him as a model man. He was a single man, and was very fond of horticultural pursuits. Nothing pleased him better than the laying-out of a garden. In almost every home in the district there will be someone who will mourn the loss of a good true friend.
