An inebriate, brought before the Taihape Court on Saturday, emulated the defence of that cute little animal the skunk, and was promptly discharged, the presiding justice, Mr J. P. Aldridge, being completely taken off his guard by the novelty of this method of defence, discharged the prisoner in less time than it takes to tell.
The Patriotic Committee meeting called for to-night has been postponed until next Monday night. A child’s gold bangle has been found. The owner can have same by applying to this office and paying cost of advertisement. The steamer Victoria left Sydney at midnight, on the sth with a huge Australian and English mail for New Zealand. She is due to arrive on Tuesday morning. A number of N C.O. ’s of the D Company 7th Regiment and No. 43 Company Senior Cadets left for Palmerston North this morning to attend the refresher course. Mr Cartier informs this office that he liberated 9000 hainbow trout in the liautapu River on Saturday morning, and that he will liberate another 9000 to-morrow (Tuesday.) There seems to be some particularly good fishing in the Hautapu River this year. On Saturday Mr Jones took some seven or eight fairly large fish in that reach of the river near the slaughter yards. A first offender appeared at the Taihape Court this morning, before Mr, J. P. Aldridge, J.P., to answer to a charge for drunkenness and was remanded for a week for medical treatment. The attention of all tennis players is drawn to an advertisement in another column, announcing that the annual meeting of the Club is to be held in the Fire Brigade Hall on Thursday, the 12th inst., at S p.m. All members, and aiso all intending members, are invited to be present.
Mr E. G. Wilson, formerly stationmaster at Taihape, but now living at St. Albans, Christchurch, has three sous serving the Empire. Last week Mr. Wilson received word that his son Don had been wounded in France. On September 19th. Mr Wilson is at present Honorary secretary of the Lady Liverpool Fund in Christchurch.
At a meeting of wool exporters with a sub-committee of the War Trade Department in Britain, it was pointed out that unless steps were taken this season there was grave danger of ffeutrals buying a very large proportion of the colonial clip. This would be disadvantageous to manufacturers in Great Britain and the countries of the Allies.
On or about the 23rd inst. the hospital ship Marama is expected to return to New Zealand from the war zone. It is anticipated that the vessel will only remain here for a little over a week to refit. The present medical staff will come ashore on arrival here, and their places will be taken by Col. the Hon. W. E. Collins, N.Z.M.C., and ( the greater part of the staff that did duty on the hospital ship Maheno during her first trip.
At the annual meeting of the Rangitikei A. and P. Association on Saturday, complimentary reference was made to the work of the President by Mr G. A. Wheeler in proposing that Mr Addis should be re-elected. It was owing to his energy that the balance sheet showed such good results. Later, Mr Oldham congratulated Mr Addis on his roelection, and on behalf of the outgoing Committee, thanked him for his courtesy and patience .
