THE SPANISH SENSATION.
MAURA'S OBJECT DOUBTFUL. LONDON, Sept 13. Maura’s real object’ is doubtful). He has always been Francophile and Anglophile, though his clerical and military supporters are pro-German. He is now anxious to regain popularity which he lost through his harsh repression of the Barcelonia revolutionaries. There are 80,000 Germans in Spain. A most active and astute campaignl has largely* persuaded the Spaniards that the Central Powers are invincible. Public opinion is tending to believe that there is a possibility of German victory—but it wants something in exchange for Spanish support. The Premier Scnor Eomanones, apparently ‘approves of Senor Maura’s speech, which may portend a union of Maura’s and Koumanone’s forces in a National Cabinet.
