THE GENERAL GRANT’S GOLD.
,vr AN UNSUCCESSFUL SEARCH. DUNEDIN, duly 10. Captain Catling, who left Dunedin bn February 2;)th in the cutter 'Enterprise .in an endeavour to secure go\l from the “General Grant, returned on Sunday night. Captain Catling is perfectly, satisfied'.' b He located Die scene of the wreck in a 'dirge cavern, but after repeatedly diving for two days he could only discover two pieces of timber jambod beneath some large boulders. The remainder of the wreck ■ had entirely disappeared. He lias no doubt whatever that the sea, which comes in with the north-west , gales, would smash any ship to fragments m a. short turn'-- He closely examined the bottom of the cavern, searching crevices between the boulders for any sign of gold. He says if the General Grant’s gold was in bars, he is satisfied it must still have been there —that is, if it had not been removed. He is also satisfied that-the cavern which he searched was the sceen of the wreck. There I was no sign of sand or silt on the bottom, and even pue gold’coin could easi_ yl bo seen. Ho concluded that the gold was secured by the Daphne in 18G9, and that the boat m which the crew rowed off with it was swamped and lost.
