THE POLITE KAISER.
A pretty story connected with the German-trodden Duchess of Luxembourg has just come to Sight in L-f Journal (Paris). It was the day after her father's death, whtn broken down with grief, and thinking little of the' throne that had thus been vacated for her, a messenge rudely broke in upon her mourning. He had brought a letter from th e Kaiser, and requested an immediate reply which, "he hinted should be in the ajrmative." Having ead the offending missive and given a categorical "no" fo answer, the youthful Duchess soundly eaprimanded the instrument for disturbing he upon such a matter at such an inopportune moment. "No, a thousand times no," exclaimed the then niieteen-year-old Duchess. "I would rather abdicate nv" die in a convent." And now this coming to pass, fo the brutal Invasion of her little country was but the Kaiser's vengeance, it appears, for her reply to his messenger. The letter he had sent contained, not a galknt offer of marriage from the Kaiser's sixth son, but a peremptory command from the German Emperor that the Duchess should wed that Prince.
