THE STORY OF THE HIGHLAND REGIMENTS.

By FREDERICK WATSON. A. and C. Black; 5/ net.

The records of the great war have aroused the martial spirit which .has lain dormant in the breasts of many decendants of men who have fought in bygone campaigns, and among the famous regiments that have won honour for our country none have been more distinguished than the Highland Regiments. The story told in those pages fulfils the claim of its author that it is "not merely a narrative of regimental gallantry—it is also the story of our Empir e for nearly two hundred years, the story of strange lands and peoples, of heroism and endurance, of the open sea and the frontier. It is even more than that —it is the story of solf-sacri-fice, of courage, of patriotism." The Highland regiments won distinction on the battlefields of Flanders in 1745, against the French army under Marshal Saxe. They were in the van of the battle when Wolfe stormed Quebec, and they added to their laurels in the Napoleonic wars. The record r, f thoir exploits involves descriptions of , some of th e most famous victories in British history. The Crimean War af- , forded fresh opportunities for the display of the indomitable courage and endurance which has alwaj's been characteristic of the Highland clans. The Indian Mutiny will- 1 always be associate ed with the wonderful feat of arms accomplished by small British forces against overwhelming numbers, and no regiments achieved greater renown than th Highlanders, in whom the Com-mander-in-Chief (Sir Colin Campbell) placed implicit reliance. In the Afghanistan, Egyptian, and South Afri- j can Wars the Highlanders upheld their reputation. The romance of war is re-

fleeted in these exploits, and Mr. Vv'at sen maes excellent use of the abun dant materials avaiJable for his story A number of coloured illustrations de pict incidents that have become not able in British military history.
