TAIHAPE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the Taihape Borough Council was held last evening, Avhen there Avere present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr A. L. Arrowsmith) and Crs W. McLennan, G. Wrightson, F. Somerville, R. Healey, and Dr Barnett.

The Wanganui Hospital and Charitable Aid Board Avrote, enclosing a copy of the motion to the effect that the Board encourages recruiting in evei’y possible Avay and impresses the necessity of this course on every local body. The Mayor remarked that he had received a telegram from Mr McLaren saying he Avas delivering recruiting speeches and Avould visit Taihape, but he (t)he Mayer) had replied to the effect that Taihape had more than completed its quota. In connection Avith the Wanganui Board’s motion he would move that the letter be acknowledged and the Board advised that the Council would do all in its power to assist recruiting.

Mefsr s J. Evans and D. Neagle applied for permission to auction or sell articles in the streets on Saturday. November 6th and Saturday, (November 13th, the proceeds to he devoted to the interests of Candidate No. 4. —On the motion of Cr. Wrightson it was resolved to grant permission subject to the supervision of the borough engineer, Avfho Avoulq see that the traffic Avas not impeded. COMMITTEE’S REPORTS.

The Finance Committee recommend ed that no further expense be incurred in connection with the steam roller.

The Mayor stated that the amount set down on the estimates for the steam roller work had been expended and hi view of expense the Council would be put to later on, it would not be advisable to spend any more money on the roller at present. The report was adopted.

The Electric Light and Waterworks Committee reported having met on the Ist instant, and submitted the following recommendation: “That a motor be purchased to replace the one now driving the pump.” On like motion of the Mayor the report was adopted and the purchase of a motor was, on the motion of Cr McLennan, left in the hands of the Electric Light Committee and the Engineer
