CARNIVAL NOTES.
(BY THE 0.5.) There was quite a sunnier of excite- ? ment in the town on Sautrday, and th e various committees were hard at weik gathering in. the bullion. Tber e are ■ all sorts of rumours flying round in : connection with the financal assistance that is likely to happen along within tJhe next few daps in favour of certain 1 candidates, and some very big cheques alre mentioned. A big fight i s in progress—there is no doubt about it —and the silver bullets will rattle with dead, ly persistency during the next few weeks. And may the bombardment be a vigorous one. “Amen,” from Mr S. Dunbar. “Our candidate is going to win,” | said a well-known settler to me tills | mclrning.’lven if it costs me my farm!” and he brought his fist down on my office table with such patriotic fervour that th e ink bottles were scattered in all directions. There was an ugly glint ,in his eye a s he spoke, which seemed to indicate that any attempt to doubt the veracity of his statement might lead to disastrous consequences—to the doubter. So not feeling too robust I merely nodded my head in acquiescence and he thereupon invited me out to discus s matters of a caning nature. Taijhape and district is in for a whirl of festivities. To-morrow night there - will be a big concert and dance at . Mataroa. A rattling good programme has been arranged by the Entertainment Committee and a crowded house ] is practically assured. Quite a number of Taihape folk will attend the enter- f tainmjent which is to assist the can- j didature of Miss Forde.
The friends of Miss Carpenter have arranged for a little social function to be held in (hetr honour to-morrow afternoon; while a garden party will be held at Mrs R. W. Smith’s residence on Thursday afternoon to assist “Our Boys” candidature. The supporters of the Red Cross ' eprescntativ e have arranged for a similar function for theiy nomin'ee, which, I am told will eventuate on Thursday, the 30th. inst.
Th e friends of Miss Whenuaroa are
allowing no vegetation to luxuriate under their feet, and they have decided to have an “afternoon” at Mrs Whenuaroa’s on Saturday next and a garden party on the first Tfmirsday in October.
On Friday next, th e 24th inst., a concert and dance will be held at Rangawea to further the interests of the Ruanui rpresentative, Mis s Fqrde, and I am informed that it is going to be quite a big affair.
The monster concert which was to have bean held in tjhe Town Hall on the 23rd inst lias been postponed till Monday next, the 27 th inst. I understand that a fine array of musical and elocutonary talent has been secured for the entertainment and everything augurs well fgr its success. A Belgian flag donated by Mrs G. Lyndon will be auctioned during the evening on behalf of thi 3 competing Queens, and donors of bids will have the right to ear-mark the amount of their donation for any particular candidate they at"e desirous of supporting. A meeting of Miss Forde’s supporters was held ’in Mr Ryan’s office on Saturday afternoon for the purpose of a local committee. There was an excellent attendance, and Mr H. O’Callagthan presided. A good deal of business was transacted and a feature of the gathering was the earnestness and enthusiasm which characterised the proceedings. The following committee was set up: Messrs E. Anderson, Banks, Fra«jer, Webb, Addis, McKay, Cleaved, McCarthy, Gilchrist, and Terry. Mr H. O’aCllaghan was elected chairman and Mr A. M. Ryan secretary. It was resolved that it be a recommendation to the general committee to hold a concert and dance in the Town Hall on Wednesday, (ihe 29th inst.
A meeting of Miss Eng’s committee will be held at Mangaweßa this evening. The friends of the Mangaweka representative (and they are numerous) have entered heartily into the spirit of the competition, and they are out to win.
Although the Carnival i s only in its initial stages interest is already very keen and rivalry [heafthy. The bullion accruing from the effects of the various candidates should bis very weighty by the time the numbers go up. Anyhow there ig going ro be some fun.
