DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB.
A large attendance of members and intending members were present, and ibe following new members were elected: Messrs Church, S. Reid, J. Whenuaroa, W. Draper, D. Tidswell and J. Cameron
The President (Mr J. G. Turnbull) reported good- progress and a successful season during the year just closed and commented upon the high standard of attained by individual members generally. The balance slheet was unanimously, adopted. It showed a very satisfactory state of tlx e finances.
The following trophies were presented (by the President) to the winners of the various competitions: Hiwera Cup, won by Sergt W. Mathie; second priss e (T. Bason’s trophy), won by Sergt C. Cribh. Sutherland Cup, won by L. P. Anderson; second prize (McLaughlan Bros’ trophy), won by E. C. Gibbs, MV J. F. Studjholme’s trophy for highest aggregate, won by Sergt W. Matiiie,
Second prize, trophy won by Pros. J. Turnbull. 600 yards aggregate for season, F. W. Somerville’s trophy, Avon by Pes. J. Turnbull. 300 yards aggregate for season, H. Marsh’s trophy, won by Sergt W. Mathie. At. this stage a very pleasant surprise was given the president and the secretary, when Sergt Mathie on behalf of members of the Club, presented each of these gentlemen with a handsomely framed enlargement of the Club, which seemed to’ be highly appreciated by both and suitable thanks were returned.
The following others were then duly elected for the ensuing year:
Patron, Mr J. F. Studholme (reelected); vice-patrons, Messrs M. Morrison, R. W. Smith and H. Jaggard; president, J. G. Turnbull (re-elected); vice-president, H. Marsh (re-elected); sec. and treas., H. Johnston (re-elect-ed) ; custodian, J. A. Anderson (reelected); auditor, L. E. Deacon (reelected). A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr L. E. Deacon for his past services qs auditor.
Handicapper: H. Johnston (re-elect-ed); committee, Messrs W. Mathie, C. Cribb, E. Anderson, D. Hamilton, F. Jones, W. Draper, F, Somerville, and W. Kuhtze.
It was decided to open the forthcoming soasrn on Monday, Sept. 27th (Dominion Day) and Mrs J. G. Thimbu i’, v, ife of the president, will fire the opening s{hot. Te Kapua Club will be invited to fire a friendly match over ranges 300 and 500 yajrds with the local ciub. Ladles and friends of members are specially invited to attend. The inadvisability of inaugurating a miniature rifle range for winter months was suggested by Mr Mortland and it was decided that this matter b.g dealt with at a future meeting to bo arranged
During the evening a vote of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Rifleman T. E, Knowles, late of this Club, who died gloriously at the front fighting for his King and country. A recommendation was made to the incoming committee that a suitable championship trophy be provided for competition. A committee meeting wit! be held on Fjriday evening next to make final arrangements for opening day.
