It is customary for a public journal to say something about the fitness of candidates offering for public' positions, and, al- , though inch comment is particularly distasteful to us on this occasion we have no intention of shirking a public duty whether we please or otherwise. We realise that the old Council had good men in it, but we are also of opinion that very few have had that experience in organising large public works schemes . that the present unfortunate circumstances now demand. Among - the candidates, old and new, there are men capable of taking the initiative and carrying through the reforms so urgently needed; they have had the experience and they have proved, quite recently, that they possess the proclivity, the insight, and organising capacity absolutely necessary for the initiation arid development of immense commercial schemes. Foremost among ithem is Mr. H. D. Bennett. We stand in dire need of business ability \ in Mr. Bennett we ; have its very essence and concentration; and, setting aside all other considerations, we say that in Mr, Bennetjt we look for the salvation of our Works and finances, and we tmst, for the sake of the town, every elector, whoever else he or may vote for, will include Mr. Berinett in the ticket. Failure tu accept;his services at this dJ.st.ressing"juncture will be a public calamity. There are other men offering With keen business instincts, although we believe they cannot lay claim to 'such experience as that of Mr, Bennett. Amongst new candidates we have Mr. W. McLennan, Mr. F. W, Somerville, Dr, Barnett, and perhaps others, but these are all able to grasp great financial questions and lend an intelligent aid in straightening out our financial troubles, and we have confidence in commending McLennan has shad the advantage of close experience in municipal mat|£rs, md|t|ps will naturally him of affairs, which, "combined ‘Nvfm his undoubted business capacity, would render JplWl' very valuable addition to the Council, Amongst old coun..ciLLors. there are men of outstanding merit in one way or another.
