THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
ORDINARILY MONTHLY MEETING
The first monthly meeting, this year, of the Taihape School Committee was held in the schoolroom last night. Present: Messrs A. J. Joblin (chair man), .1. Evans, Burrell, McGowan, Donovan, H. J. Kuhtze and Rev. R. H. Catherwcod. FINANCE. Accounts amounting - to £lO7 12s fid were passed for payment. CORRESPONDENCE, Letters were received from the Wacommittee of the appointment of Miss committee fc the appointment of Miss N. B. Brodrich, Miss M. E. Little and Mr R. D. Mcßae to positions In the Taihape sch 00l. —Received. A letter was read from Mr H. D. Bennett with reference to a promise he made some time back that he would give as a voluntary contribution to the school funds, part cf.the rein, received by him for the Winiata Hall from the Education Department. He enclosed a cheque for the contribution to date, and promised further similar contributions. —Received with applause, and the secretary was instructed to write to Mr Bennett thanking him for his generous contribution.
The director of the Feilding Technical School, Mr J. Matthews, wrote,with instructions from the Education Board, asking the committee if they could arrange a date for the holding of a public meeting ni Taihape to try and arouse enthusiasm in connection with technical education. He suggested Monday, the Bth (yesterday) as a good date. If that was a suitable date, Mr Pirani, chairman of the Education Board, would accompany him, and so with the committee’s assistance they would attempt to give the cause a fresh start in the town.
The letter was received, and as it was impossible to arrange a meeting for the Bth, it was decided to hold one on the 15th, a date that would also suit the above writer. HEADMASTER’S REPORT. The headmaster, Mr J. Thurston, reported as follows; School was re-opened on the Ist February with a fair attendance. During the week 47 new pupils were admitted, while 33 left. The roll number for the primary department at the end of the week was 400. The number on the roll of the secondary department at the end of 1014 tvas 14, while now the roll number is 37. At Winiata the roil number is 23. This gives a total roll number of 467 in all departments. Mr Mcßae, who was appointed third assistant in place of Mr Fcden, who resigned, began duty on the first of February. Miss Little, sixth assistant, began duty cu the same date. Miss Brcdrick, pupil teacher, begins duty on Tuesday next. The report was received. GENERAL. Mr Thurston’s contribution cf one guinea towards the school funds was received with acclamation. Mr Jennings was nominated auditor for the committee. The Works Committee reported that the contract for asphalting the school playground had been completed. A motion was passed expressing the committee’s appreciation of the way the Works Committee had carried out the school improvement scheme.
