COAL PRICES DOWN
PRICE-CUTTING WAR BEGINS HOUSEHOLDERS BENEFIT As anticipated in yesterday's SUN, the price-cutting competition between coal-mining companies operating in the Waikato has resulted in a reduction in the retail price of household coal. This action was decided upon at a meeting of the Coal Dealers' Association, held yesterday afterHouseliold coal will now be sold in Auckland at 64s a ton. Half-tons will be 335, quarter-tons 17s 9d, and single sacks 6s 2d. The prices for kitchen coal will be tons, 575; halftons, 29s 6d; quarter-tons, 15s 6d; single sacks, 5s sd, Discounts are allowed on these prices for cash payments. COMMENCED IN JULY Price-cutting on the part of the companies concerned commenced in July when • one of the collieries reduced the price of kitchen coal by 2s a ton. The other mines followed the lead and since then further competition has followed the letting of large contracts for steam coals. “The mine-owners are not speaking to each other just now,” stated a business man prominently connected with the industry. It is thought possible that further competition may result in a further reduction.
