TRUTH COSTS MONEY
VISITORS TO AUSTRALIA ASSESSED FOR TAX AUCKLANDER’S EXPERIENCE It does not pay to tell the truth in Australia. Honesty resulted in Mr. W. Kerns, manager of the Australian Glass Company, Limited, paying income-tax during his recent visit to Sydney. “I was in Sydney for only a week and two days and yet they charged me income-tax on the salary I was drawing and also threepence in the £ toward the unemployment fund,” said Mr. Kerns this morning, on the Ulimaroa. Apparently it is now the duty of the officials in Australia to find out from new arrivals whether they are on business or pleasure. Mr. Kerns, when he was asked the question, innocently replied that he had come on ab usiness trip. The next thing he knew was that he was being assessed for income-tax and had to pay his contributin toward the unemployed fund in the Commonwealth. Speaking of business, Mr. Kerns said that his firm’s Australian factory was now producing most beautiful crystal. Cut glass experts have been brought from Czechoslovakia. The, tariff was now so high that it prevented practically any cut glass being imported into the Commonwealth.
The firm’s plant for manufacturing window plate glass was now almost completed and the local article will soon be on the Australian market.
