"TE ARAMOANA”

j NAMING NEW WATERFRONT HIGHWAY SUGGESTIONS TO COUNCIL What will the new waterfront road ; be called? ! This question is perplexing Auck- | land. j. Before the City Council reaches a | decision Auckland will be really worried. Everyone seems to be realising the importance of the road as a scenic route and everyone is agreed that the ) road should receive a name thorough Ivin accord with this importance. It must be appropriate and descriptive of Auckland. As the road is on a shore j unrivalled for the wealth of its Maori j history, the name will be a native one, ; for preference. j The Akarana Maori Association has j offered three names for consideraticm by the City Council. They are: Te Aratai —“The Seafront Road,” Te Aramoana —“The Ocean Road,” and Tahatai Road—“ Seaside Road.” Tn the first two names the use of the word “road” is not necessary, as the Maori word “ara” signifies that. All three names are extremely simple and effective. The council has informed the association that the suggestions will receive consideration at a meeting on September 25. A protest against the encroachment of the waterfront roadway on Koliimarama Beach has been sent to the council by the association, which considers the remaining beaches on the City side of the Waitemata Harbour should be preserved as being necessary to the scenic value of the harbour.
