SOME LIKELY IMPROVERS SMART FILLY PROVES WAYWARD Special to THE SUN WELLINGTON, Friday. With the Marton and Wanganui meetings at hand and Avondale following, there has been a general livening at the tracks in this district. Trentham is not the hive of activity that some of the other tracks are, but there aro a few horses in work there that will figure at some of the bigger of the spring lixtures. S. J. Reid, who has fifteen horses in training for Mr. Vivian Riddiford, had intended taking one of the more forward of his two-year-olds. Type, to Marton in company with Historic, and run her in the parade there. However, transport and other considerations have induced him to change his mind and only Historic will make the trip. Type will be sent to Avondale and will run in the Stakes. She is by Leighton out of Merit. There is speed on both sides of her family, and she gives the impression that she will come to her best early. Mr. Vivian Riddiford’s two English mares, Graciosa and Forest Girl, are to bo mated with Chief Ruler this season. May Be Good A filly which E. George is training at New Plymouth for Mr. E. Harper has attracted some attention by good track work. Running under the name of Lady Lulu, she finished second to Orapai in the Maiden Scurry at the Taranaki Hunt meeting, and as she is open to a whole lot of improvement she lias
been marked down by present to carry their investments in the near future. Lady Lulu is a sister to Valkon. and some hold that she will be as good as her relative. Lady Pam One of last season’s juveniles who showed distinct promise was Lady Pam. When working on the tracks shortly before the last summer meeting at Trentham she showed a distinct inclination to play up at the start. This fault has developed, and in her recent essays at headquarters she has been very troublesome. However, when under way she gallops well, and will be more than useful if she can be cured of her waywardness. Her unreliability in starting will keep many of the Trentham track watchers from supporting her when she sports silk. Gasnapper ran very badly at New Plymouth. With the race half over lie was lengths behind the field, and he did not improve his position in the run home. ll© was very poorly backed, and it is clear that he had not pleased his connections in his preparation for the race. Will Pay his Way An improver in work at New Plymouth is Crennatown. The Archiestown gelding was raced at the Taranaki Hunt gathering, and his owners attended the meeting to see him run. He was quietly fancied notwithstanding the fact that he is not the sort of galloper whom the turning New Plymouth course would suit. He was beaten, but the good third he ran must have greatly pleased his connections, who realise that he will be a much better proposition on a bigger course. He is by Arcliiestown from a Martian mare and appears to have very fair prospects of paying his way this season. One of the more forward of the Taranaki two-year-olds is Eastertime, a bay gelding by Illumination from Gambolling, trained at New Plymouth by E. George for Mrs. Walter Graham. Two others who are forward are Hampdes and Summertime, both in O. Cox’s stable at Haw era. These belong to Mr. F. Bristol. I-lampdes is a colt by Tea Tray, and Summertime is a filly by Grandeourt. The steeplechaser Mandate was very sore after racing at Dannevirke, where lie won, and it might not have been possible to get him right again for Marton, but if he can be raced lie will go close to winning once more.
