INITIAL DANCE

BIRKENHEAD EX-SERVICEMEN SUCCESSFUL EVENING The recently-formed ex-Service-men’s Association of Birkenhead held its first dance and social in the R.A.0.8. Hall, Birkenhead, last evening. The president, Dr. J. W. Craven, who presided, explained the objects of the association and extended a hearty welcome to those present. The Mayor, Mr. J. p. McPhail, also spoke and congratulated the exservicemen on the formation of their association in the district. Mr. Bryce Hart, president of the Takapuna exservicemen, gave details on how the Takapuna Club was run. Members of the crew of the steamer Penybryn, who went to the rescue of the Tahiti, were the guests of the evening and upon introduction by the president were given great applause. Musical items given by Messrs. J. W. Cocks, S. Carter, Mesdames Maxwell and Carter and Miss Helen Taylor were greatly appreciated.. Miss Mavis Hewson was the accompanist. The Merrymakers Orchestra supplied the dance music. Among those present were: Mrs. J. Canty, frock of blue and fawn crepe de chine; Mrs. Canary, apricot satin beaute; Mrs. S. T. Carter, figured embossed velvet; Mrs. E. J. Spencer, midnight blue crepe de chine and silver; Mrs. R. Hay man, beaded georgette; Mrs. J. Goulden, orange silk relieved with silver; Mrs. A. D. Maxwell, peach satin and blue georgette; Mrs. A. Clow, blue crepe de chine and lace with diamente relief; Mrs. IJilton, apricot and blue satin; Mrs. Rose, black georgette and cream lace; Mrs. P. Pugh, navy blue satin; Mrs. G. Pugh, saxe blue crepe de chine trimmed with beige; Mrs. Beason, blue crepe de chine and fawn reliefs; Mrs. Kerruish, saxe blue ring velvet; Mrs. R. Dunne, lemon chenille frock; Mrs. Vincent, apple green crepe de chine; Mrs. Len Turvey, green crepe de chine. Mrs. F. Blackwell, who wore a frock of jade green crepe de chine; Mrs. G. I-lewson, rose taffeta with silk net flounce; Mrs. Smithson, red floral rayon; Mrs. Tothill, frock of floral ninon; Mrs. P. Lees, white satin beaute and posy; Mrs. J. Gracie, black georgette and gold; Mrs. C. J. Laver, mauve crepe de chine with uneven hem, embroidered with sequins; Miss Annie Berry, floral chiffon vedvet; Miss Alice Berry, daffodil lace and ring velvet; Miss Helen Taylor, ivory crepe de chine; Miss M. Hewson, mist blue satin beaute; Miss G. Hewson. blush pink georgette; Miss Smithson, purple crepe de chine; Miss D. Johnson, pink and white crepe de chine; Miss T. Couch, ankle length frbok of mauve net; Miss Sarah Beason, pink taffeta and posy to tone; Miss H. Ciemett, shell pink georgette and silver.
