MUNGANA ECHO

ACTION NOT POSSIBLE UNDER OLD LAW . CASE AGAINST THEODORE Reed. 10.20 a.m. BRISBANE, Today. The storm hanging over the Mungana mine lease inquiry broke in the Queensland Parliament when the Attorney-General, Mr. N. F. MacGroarty', moved for tlie introduction of a Bill to amend the Crown Remedies Act of 1874. He stated the reason why Mr. E. G. Theodore had not been criminally prosecuted was that the evidence given before the Royal Commission could kiot be used iu criminal proceedings. The Government was now introducing legislation to amend the law so civil action may be taken. , The Bill was read a first time. Mr. E. G. Theodore, then Federal Treasurer and former Premier of Queensland, and Mr. William McCormack. also a former Premier of Queensland, were found by the Mungana Royal Commission to have been guilty of dishonesty in connection with tlie transfer of certain mine leases. When the report was issued Mr. Theodore resigned from Mr. Scuilin’s Cabinet.
