ANCIENT BIBLICAL PORT

Elath, the Biblical port on the Dead Sea, whence Solomon’s gold fleets sailed to Ophir, may function once more as a port for the modern chemical treasures of the Dead Sea. The concession for the exploitation of the mineral resources of the Dead Sea, the text of which has recently been published by the British Government, provides for the construction of a railway line to Akaba, which is the modern Arabic name for the ancient Biblical site.

While the government is restoring the harbour, the concessionaires will probably transport their products by motor to Jaffa or Haifa, or may construct a suspension railway from the Dead Sea .to Jerusalem or to the Biblical Beth-Shan in the Jordan valley. But eventually truck loads of potash and other valuable material will daily be transported from Jerico to the ancient port of Solomon, while warehouses and shipping offices, business premises and directors’ villas will revive in the small Arab fishing village, the ancient glories of the erstwhile trading centre of the Jewish state, 1
