ROYAL RULER’S EFFORT
RACE WILL IMPROVE HIM The three-year-old Royal Ruler did not quite race up to the expectations of his admirers in the sprint at the Pakuranga meeting, but his effort was very satisfactory. It was his first appearance since his two-year-old races, when he was favourably reviewed as a fine type for this season’s classics. Royal Ruler did not get away too smartly in Saturday’s sprint and this cost him ground, but lie made a creditable effort toward the finish, showing plenty of grit to be in fifth place at the end. He looked a picture in the enclosure. but allowing for that it is possible that he needed a race. At anyrate sportsmen will expect the speedy son of Chief Ruler to display improved form at Avondale next month when the Guineas contest comes up for decision.
