BIG RACE

WARWICK STAKES CRACKS MEET NEXT SATURDAY LnitecL P.A.—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, Monday. For the Warwick Stakes (a weight-for-age mile race) next Saturday Nightmarch heads the weights with 9.3. Limerick, Amounis, Fujisan and Chide will each carry 9.0, Loquacious $.12. and Phar Lap 8.13. Nightmarch struck a hind, leg during a brilliant gallop on Saturday. A veterinary surgeon treated the injury, which is much improved. Racing men’s doubts about the mission of Tom Pinch were settled today, when the owner said he would be a certain starter in the Epsom Handicap.

PHAR LAP’S NARROW ESCAPE An accident which might possibly have broken one or both hind legs of Phar Lap was narrowly averted at Randwiek a few mornings ago. The champion had just concluded a five furlong gallop with the ex-New Zealander Auda on the “B” grass track. He was not allowed to go at his job. and after passing the “winning p«« r “ was still fighting for his head. librider found it difficult t<> pull him up and the chestnut lugged out toward tii • outer rail past the seven furlongs post, which is only about 70 yards past the “winning” post. Just at that moment the Auckland owned Full Measure and Balloon King, who had travelled at an even time gait for three furlongs, were just accumulating pace, when Full Measure on the outside was on top of Phar Lap before his rider noticed the big chestnut. An accident appeared inevitable, but Full Measure, with the instinct of the thoroughbred, veered on to the inside of the champion and missed him by a fraction of an inch. Had the horses collided, the Derby colt Balloon King might have been brought down also.
