PAKURANGA HUNT OPENS NEW SEASON

Racing at Ellerslie

FINE CARD FOR TOMORROW Review of the Fields

By

"EARLY BIRD”

THE new racing season in the Auckland Province will receive a splendid send-off at Ellerslie tomorrow, when the annual race meeting of the Pakuranga Hunt Club is to he held. Excellent, acceptances have been received for the whole eight events, and some most interesting sport will be witnessed. The course is in good order, but the going will he on the soft side. Prior to the first race a parade of two-year-olds will he staged, about twenty youngsters being lined up in divisions at the barrier and sprinted up the straight. A review of the fields engaged tomorrow, with the final summing-up, is given below. n*J7 GREENMOUNT HUNTERS’ STEEPLES Of £2ooj about 21 miles Mandate . . 10 3 This is quite a nice field for the Scaramouche 9 0 MariOL Una ■* o R opening event, and if they all go ° e Maniapoto 9 0 Solanio 9 3 to the post it will be an interesting Lovely Boy . 9 0 The Roadman 9 0 contest. Mandate’s Awapuni form Cullgie ... 9 0 Freyja ... 9 0 was distinctly promising, and as Absent ... 9 0 lie must have improved since then he may be in big demand. The only trouble with the top-weight is that it is his first time over the Ellerslie hill. Foxhound would be hard to beat if he could be prevailed upon to do his best. Marita is a fair sort and a possibility in this company. Solanio has schooled well, and The Roadman is likely. Freyja, if she stands up, may seriously test the top-weight. Of the others Scaramouche and Absent may be the pick. Favourites may be: FOXHOUND and FREYJA 10 17 HARRIS HUNTERS’ HURDLES Of £200; U miles Mashoor . .10 12 Many of the field in this contest Klngsland . 9 C Pennyplain . 10 7 also figure in other events, and it Temperature 9 0 Oscar • • • • JJJ f is difficult to name the probable Small Goods 9 0 Mandate y ' IS starters. Mashoor will no doubt .. •Spalpiko ::: Xl2 he kept for the Hunt Cup, but TWinkler '.'.90 Marble Mount 9 2 Pennyplain is a possible starter and Thanks ... 9 0 Day Lass ..92 may be the best, although the dis- Kiwinui ... 9 0 tance could be a bit longer in his case Oscar will always be in the forefront, and others to be considered will be Fair Abbey Mandate, Spalpiko, Marble Mount, Day Lass, Kingsland, Temperature and Cullgie. Like the opening event it is a pretty sort of puzzle for backers, for they will be very much in the dark. Best supported will probably be: PENNYPLAIN and OSCAR 19 C 7 SYLVIA PARK HANDICAP Of £200; 7 furlongs If only half the number of acVolimond ..90 ceptors, 23, go to the post, It will Lady Court . 7 1 ‘ ‘ « 7 be deemed sufficient by the major- Editor . 7 0 Sir Mond .* *. I 1 jty of backers. It Is a splendid £o£ U s£P. ;•? 0 ° Gay Cockade 7 13 field too, and notable by reason of Oown Arch . 7 0 Karapoti . . 7 13 the fact that the three-year-olds Thunderstorm 7 0 The Sun ... 7 6 will be making their debut. Those Genera] Lu . 7 0 Froth blower 7 6 Q f that age that are engaged there Waimuri ..70 Roval Visitor 7 4 are 1116 s Peedy Karapoti, Lady . 7 n Patutahi ..74 Court, Sub Editor, Thunderstorm, r usoma m 7 0 Biddy Comet 7 3 Waimuri and Great Emblem. It is wild Country 7 0 known that Karapoti is well forward, but it is possible that the well-seasoned performer The Sun will hold this youngster, for his Wellington form last month was really good, and suggested further improvement. Then there are Unoco and Cruachan, both of which ran good races at the Waipa meeting. Principal, Royal Visitor, Biddy Comet and Lusoma read the best of the others for Volimond may not be ready, going on To Aroha reports. Speculators may rely upon: THE SUN and CRUACHAN 1 A*) JELLICOE HANDICAP Of £450; 1; miles True Blood . 8 13 For this time of the season the Barometer ..72 Maori Boy . 811 field in the principal flat handicap Hannibal ..72 Desert Gkw B*7 is an excellent one and will certainly nennie Chie !7 0 High Pitch . 713 Provide a stirring contest. True Daylight ..70 Standfast . . 7 13 Blood showed first-class form at Thursby ... 7 0 Pompeius . 1 7 5 Trentham, winning impressively on the only occasion he left the barrier. He has his share of weight, but he will carry it. Maori Boy is such a solid customer than he never can be ruled out. Nancy Lee’s presence in the field will stimulate interest, for if she can stay she has a chance. However, she has been handicapped up to her best and no chances have been taken for her over this middle journey, and rightly so. Desert Glow comes from a track that supples many early spring winners, which in itself is a recommendation. High Pitch has gone well in his preparation, and if the going is soft he will like it. Standfast has raced most consistently in his last five outings and should not be overlooked by those who follow an improving horse. Pompeius may make amends for his failures at the June meeting, for at his best he is up to this company. Barometer will be at home under the conditions; it was at this meeting last year that he showed good form. Hannibal is a good one, and he. too. has been doing nicely at Ellerslie since he finished behind Eager Rose and Standfast at Te Awamutu. None of the others appeal to any extent. In a good pool most money should be forthcoming for: STANDFAST and TRUE BLOOD 9 97 PAKURANGA HUNT CUP Of £600; about 3 miles Mashoor ... 11 0 A field of a dozen for the twice- Roger .... 910 ' lAt ; 1 l over-the-hill contest promises well Marita ... 9 0 in q for a stirring trial of stamina and Foxhound ..90 Spalpiko :..9 12 '™ ci "S "F'iF- A Mash ° or ,. ve 7 Scaramouche 9 0 Master Arch . 9 12 nearly defeated Aurora Borealis in Absent . . 9 0 the Winter Steeplechase at Ellerslie a couple of month ago, and just how good that form was is realised when one remembers what this pony jumper has accomplished in the meantime. Mashoor failed badly at Te Awamutu under his weight, and it may be that he is not a good weight-carrier. Tomorrow will test him. Odin is in similar case. He finished third in the Great Northern Steeplechase, and in his next three starts over country met with mishaps each time. It is in his favour here that the field is comprised of hunters only. Huirangi Girl has raced moderately of late but St. Warrigal’s form has been steadily improving, and he is now sticking on better. He is a rare good jumper. Spalpiko is one always likely to bob up, and of those farther down the chanches of Master Arch, Foxhound and Freyja are preferred. Two heavily-supported candidates will be: ST. WARRIGAL and ODIN 9 10 AUCKLAND HANDICAP Of £200; 1 mile Sir Mond ..90 Hacks that have not won over a Bizarro ... 7 5 Trishna . .. 8 12 distance exceeding seven furlongs Milvane ... 7 0 Carlaris . . . 812 are ca tered for in this race. Sir Beau Irish . 7 0 Principu ..85 Mond will go better on a dry course, £rch F Fagle '7 0 Rosshire* .81 and Trishna seemed to be coming Vanesta '7 0 Catoma ... 7 8 back to form earlier in the winter. Cat-i-mei 7 0 Carlaris may not be affected by his course of hurdling, and Principal has run one or two good races in his later outings. Rosshire is the logical favourite on the strength Qf his Trentham performances, which were brilliant. He is one that may require a strong horseman and well served in this respect he will be a warm order. Catoma showed up in his outings at the Great Northern meeting, while Bizarro is a handy sort. Those on the minimum have little to recommend them. The public choice may fall upon: ROSSHIRE and CATOMA 9 C 7 LADIES’ BRACELET Of £200; 1 X miles Oscar .... 11 10 The amateur riders will hold the Scaramouche 10 7 Fall of the stage in this event. Oscar is en- Small Goods 10 7 Year ... 11 7 titled to his place at the head of Royal Survey 10 7 Pennyplain* .* U 7 the list for he is speedy enough. Jg ] Day Lass . . 10 10 Fal ! ° the Year has pace, and won r , ost Comet 10 7 Solanio ... 10 10 a similar event at Gisborne recently. Catulus ... 10 7 The same rider, Mr. H. Dods, will be in the saddle. He is a capable amateur, and has ridden with success in the last few seasons, both on the flat and over obstacles against the professional horsemen. Odin and Pennyplain are two fancies, but their chances will not be enhanced by hard races earlier in the day. Day Lass is a genuine stayer, and of the remainder Solanio and Dominican are favoured. A great deal will deper-d upon the gentlemen on top in this race. On paper there should be most demand for: OSCAR and FALL O’ THE YEAR A A*) DUNEDIN HANDICAP Of £350; 6 furlongs Gold Money . 9 0 Fittingly enough, the final event Llanore ... 7 3 Prince of 1 ?13 has attracted a first-class field of p'rinfe 7 1 Orange ..79 sprinters, capable of effecting a Grand Spirit 7 0 King’s Speech 7 8 repetition of Flying Prince’s mild Awamutu . . 7 0 ady ’ s Boy * \ \ surprise in this race 12 months ago. ' 7 0 Lie? Rose :7 6 ®°. ld Money has her weight on top Ralainga .! 7 0 Chromadyne 7 5 sl ? e won twice in June here and Valstreet ..70 Sea Cob ... 7 3 if stripped in the same form may Foot Rule ..70 Envoy .... 7 3 be dangerous. It remains to be Valroe ... 7 0 seen if she has retained her form. Royal Ruler had to be put aside after he won the A.R.C. Welcome Stakes last October and was not se*en at his best when produced later in the season. He is said to be well forward and a distinct possibility, for he has two notable characteristics—speed ana gameness. Prince of Orange very nearly touched off Havering on the final day of the Wellington meeting, and that form must be good enough cvhen one remembers Havering’s deeds under big imposts. This form reads the best. Lucy Rose is said to have done a solid preparation and is likely to go a good race. Chromadyne is a big, speedy horse with a light weight, something unusual with him, and if he receives the right assistance from his rider he would nearly win. The difficulty is to secure a rider at the weight good enough to do the horse justice. Envoy, Llanore, White Wings, Flying Prince. Grand Spirit, Awamutu, Honiton, Valstreet and Footrule are others with speed to receive consideration, but summed up one comes back to: PRINCE OF ORANGE and ROYAL RULER
