FINAL TRY-OUTS

FEW SPRINTS THIS MORNING NANCY LEE’S GOOD SIX A feature of this morning's quiet work at Ellerslie was a smart gallop by Nancy Lee, who looks none the worse for her three hard races at Riccarton last week. She was dispatched over six furlongs on number three grass track, which furnished but little assistance to horses on a time-making mission, for it was dead. Nancy Lee scampered over the first three furlongs in a lively 38, and although the next three occupied 39 2-5, she appeared to be going well within herself to register 1.17 2-5 for the full six furlongs. It was a good performance. Will Nancy Stay? Those who know the mare best have the greatest confidence that Nancy Lee will stay out the mile and a-quarter of the Jellicoe Handicap and point out that she defeated the remainder of the Winter Cup (one mile) field just as easily as the brilliant Toxeuma put her into second place. However, there is another quarter of a mile to go in tomorrow’s race and that m&y just find a weakness. Cullgie was sent over the steeplechase fences on the flat and jumped fairly well. This hack was started in a steeplechase at Te Awamutu a couple of months ago, but did not get far, albeit his jumping showed promise. A Sprint Fancy Chromadyne, one of the popular picks for the sprint, the Dunedin Handicap, bounded along in his customary free style when galloped half a mile, which was left behind in 52. The apprentice horseman, W. Mellish, will ride Chromadyne tomorrow. Although the numerous admirers of this big gelding would like to see a stronger horseman aboard, Chromadyne is such a free goer that the youngster should succeed in holding him together. The above comprised all the work executed this morning. Most of the visiting horses are now on hand, the few remaining to arrive being due today. The course at Ellerslie is drying rapidly and providing no rain falls in the interim the going tomorrow will be splendid.
