SOLDIERS IN WANT
ONEHUNGA RELIEF EFFORT' Queen Street, Onehunga, presented a lively scene last evening when the local ex-servicemen’s club took charge. The club was formed a few weeks ago with the dual object of social work and the relief of distressed exsoldiers*. All day yesterday women helpers gathered voluntary contributions at street corners, in return for which donors were provided with a badge in the form of a Union Jack. A total of £76 was collected. The club’s main effort, however, was postponed until the evening, when the street was crowded. A procession headed by the Onehunga Citizens’ Band left the club’s headquarters in Church Street at 7.30 p.m., and the carnival spirit rose visibly as lorry after lorry proceeded along Queen Street, loaded with grotesquely , dressed jazz bands. Alaori concert parties and frontiersmen. A feature of the gala was a mock court conducted by a number of Auckland’s commercial travellers, whose jurisdiction was upheld by a contingent of frontiersmen in the capacity of court orderlies and fiercelooking policemen. The leading carrying firms in Onehunga showed their sympathy with the Diggers by supplying the motor-lorries free of charge. The function, which concluded with dancing on the green and a spirited battle of confetti, was a pronounced success and should result in temporary financial assistance to needy ex-servicemen in the borough. The gala was organised by Air. N. A. Ching, assisted by the following members of the club, Alessrs. F. C. Soar, president, A. E. Wilson, secretary, W. Harvey, treasurer, G. W. Insley, C. Brown. F. Jackson, :R. Wilks, F. H. Dodd, P. J. Guppy, J. Crotty, R. Sands and V. J. Adams.
