CRUSHED TO DEATH
WORKMAN BURIED IN QUARRY CLIFF FACE COLLAPSES Pj'css Association GREYMOUTH, Thursday. Fatal injuries were received by Mr. Richard Comerford, aged 42, who was buried under a large fall of earth in a quarry at Cobden this afternoon. A charge of explosive had been fired under a large boulder and Mr. Comerford with a fellow workman named Rawcliffe, awaited the effect. Two other men had moved up-hill to a ledge, and when the charge was fired they saw the whole face of the quarry move. A warning was shouted to Mr. Comerford and his companion and they attempted to escape. Mr. Rawcliffe just managed to reach safety, but the falling debris caught Mr. Comerford as he was stepping on to the ledge. He was overwhelmed and buried. After strenuous efforts lasting for three-quarters of an hour, the unfortunate man’s body was recovered. It was evident that death had been instantaneous, for his body had been terribly crushed. Mr. Comerford, who was a resident of Cobden, was married and had two children.
