BADMINTON CHAMPIONS
PROVINCIAL TOURNAMENT FIRST GAMES THIS MORNING More than 200 games, will be played before finality is reached in the Auckland Provincial badminton championships which commenced in the Scots’ ITall, Upper Symonds Street, this morning. Eight matches were decided before noon and games will continue without a break until 10 o’clock tonight. About 100 players are taking part in the various sections of the tournament. This number includes all of Auckland’s leading players and also the Dominion champions in both men’s and women’s singles, Mr. J. Southland and Miss D. Ellett. The runner 4 up la§t year, Mr. G. Martin, will also compete. Games will procede on two courts in all sections from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. tomorrow- and on Saturday, but the finals will not be reached until Saturday afternoon or evening. Junior games will be played in St. David’s Hall, the finals alone being in the main building. Following are results:— MEN’S SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP First Round. —J. Southon beat O. Ernst, 13 —io, 6—15, 15—6: G. Philson beat E. B. Canham, 15—2, 15—6: E. J. Rishworth beat E. B. Mansergh, 15—3, 15—2; D. G. Macfarlane beat C. Mallett, 17—14, 10—15, Second Round.—Southon beat Philson, 15—8, 15—4. FIRST YEAR MEN’S SINGLES First Round. —Hay don beat G. Kirkbride. 15—2; Chalmers beat Colegrove, 15—9; Ovens beat Bissett, 15 —14. WOMEN’S SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP First Round. —Miss D. Newton beat Miss K. Waters, 11 —1, 11—3; Miss A. Ellett beat Miss Frankham, 11—3, 11—4: Miss M. Waters beat Miss J. Solomon, 11—6, I—ll. 11—4,
