STRUCK AND GRABBED
ASSAULT IN HOTEL PROBATION FOR ASSAILANT Money and drink were the twin roots of evil as far as William Neal was concerned. He appeared at the Police Court today and pleaded guilty, through Mr. J. J. Sullivan, to stealing £4 in cash from the person of Robert Gunn Haswell on July 8. On the application of Detective-Sergeant Kelly the charge was reduced to one of common theft. “The accused is a labourer and hotel-worker, aged 45,” said Mr. Kelly. On August 8 Haswell was in an hotel bar having a drink with some friends. He left the bar for a few minutes and accused came up, and handed him a tobacco-tin which he said Haswell had dropped. A few minutes later accused claimed the tin again. As Haswell pulled it from his pocket, four £1 notes fell out. “Accused struck Haswell and grabbed the money. He was under the influence of drink and there is nothing against him previously.” Mr. Hunt placed Neal on probation for 3 2 months, ordering him to take out a prohibition order and make restitution of the £4.
