TIVOLI

“THE VAGABOND KING” "The Vagabond King," at the Tivoli | Theatre, is notable as being an all- | colour musical operetta of outstanding ! brilliance. And, above all. there is Dennis King, J the famous English actor, who portrays j Francois Villon, the king of the Vaga- J bonds, who, for one week, is allowed ] to rule as King of France. There is j also the beautiful, golden-voiced Jean- 1 nette MacDonald, who is cast as the I weak Catherine de Vauchelles. niece of the weak Louis XI., and both possess remarkable voices. Mr. King's per- i formance as the Vagabond King, the poetic leader of the rabble of Paris, will never be forgotten. Perhaps one of the most beautiful songs in the show was “Some Day,'' which is sung by Miss MacDonald, in Act 3, and repealed later with full chorus. The part of King Louis is taken by Mr. O. B. Heggie, who gives the most outstanding performance of all. His characterisation of the weak-minded, petulant King of France is a revelation. Miss Lillian Roth is seen as Huguette, the tavern wench, who gives her life for Villon, and who sings most admirably the famous “Valse Huguette.*' There is an interesting supporting programme.
