Oh, Listen To The Band
MEMORIES OF DIVIDENDS PRAISE FOR WANGANUI A tribute to the two Wanganui bands is given by a writer in the “Taranaki Daily News.'’ ‘.‘Country bands,” he says, “generally give racing clubs full value for their money and just look at the fun the public gets. What is more thrilling than a cornet player, trying to get that high, top note after he has partaken of luncheon and has backed three or four winner's? “Complaints are made that the number's of the band dwindle gradually in proportion to the number of dividends collected and at one Maori meeting some years ago, a stolid native was heard trying to do Iris best to enliven proceedings just before the last race with a bass drum solo. His confreres snored peacefully on the lawn. “But first class band music is a great attraction and Wanganui which is the proud possessor of two very fine bands, is an instance. There crowds of musiclovers surround the bandstand and not an item is allowed to pass without a round of applause. The programmes are varied, bright and up-to-date and Wanganui city would never countenance their deletion.”
