AFTER 40 YEARS

POPULAR RAILWAYMAN’S RETIREMENT HAS HAD WIDE SERVICE More than 50 railway employees, representing every branch of the department, assembled this afternoon when a presentation was made to Mr. P. F. Coldicutt, officer in charge of the inwards goods, who retires today after more than forty years in the service. Making a presentation of a leather armchair to the officer, Mr. C. J. Moon, goods agent, said the main reason for Mr. Coldicutt’s popularity was his unfailing readiness to help his subordinates and give them the benefit of his experience. It was to be hoped that he would enjoy many leisure hours in the chair which was being handed him. A presentation of a large flower bowl was made, to Mr. Coldicutt for his wife. Messrs. S. I. Greenwood, J. Commons and P. Hotchin also spoke, Mr. Hotchln recalling that he and Mr. Coldicutt had worked together at Onehunga 36 years ago. Returning thanks for *he presentation, Mr. Coldicutt was of the opinion that he wolud enjoy his rest. After 40 years he was beginning to feel a little tired. Long service in almost every part of the Dominion had made Mr. Coldicutt well known, not only in the ranks of the service but also to the public. His first appointment was at Featherston in 1890, the year of the big maritime strike. After a stay in Wanganui, Mr. Coldicutt was transferred to Auckland, where he remained for five years before going north to Kawakawa. Then came appointments to Helensvile, Belfast (Canterbury), Invercargill and Auckland, where he has been for the last 10 years. For the last three years of his service Mr. Coldicutt has been officer in charge of the inward goods.
