PAPATOETOE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
With the view of popularising th* slogan of “Shop in Papatoetoe," it was decided at the monthly meeting of tht Papatoetoe Chamber of Commerce oa Monday evening to urge on the shopkeepers the necessity of up-to-date window displays, and having the shop and streets well lighted. The questions were referred to a special committee, which was authorised to interview the shop owners. Mr. A. W. Hall, M.P. for Hauraki. forwarded a copy of the Unemployment Bill for the chamber’s consideration. The opinion was expressed that the Bill would assist unemployment, instead of creating employment, and that the needs of the country would be better met by the assisting of industry. The secretary was authorised to convey this opinion to Mr. Hall. After a long discussion regarding the recent increases in Sunday railway fares, the secretary was instructed to ask the Railway Department to forward as expression of its policy regarding suburban railway traffic, and to inquire if it intends to cater for this trade. It was also decided to invite the Welfare League to protest to the department against the increase in railway fares. It was decided to affiliate with the combined chambers of commerce ef the Franklin district.
