STOLEN SILK
WOMAN FINED £5 LEAVE TO APPEAL GRANTED For stealing a piece of silk from a city drapery firm on Friday evening. Rosa Torzillo, a domestic, aged 45, was fined £5 at the Police Court this afternoon. Default was fixed at 14 days. Torzillo, through Mr. Bryce Hart, pleaded not guilty. Evidence was given to show that Torzillo had acted in a suspicious manner, as a result of which she was detained by the floor manager. After she had been taken to his office in custody with another woman, the piece of silk had been found three yards from the door. Chief-Detective Hammond said nothing was known of the accused previously and a search of her rooms had revealed no other stolen goods. Mr. Hart contended that accused’s suspicious actions were caused by her reaching for her handkerchief, under her arm. On the application of counsel, right of appeal was allowed.
