ASSAULT IN BAR
FOURTEEN DAYS FOR EX-PUGILIST PROTEST BY COUNSEL Because he thought Herbert William McGeehau had taken his change at a City hotel on Saturday, Colin McDonald, alias Allan McDonald, became involved in a fight. The sequel was heard in the Police Court today when McDonald, fisherman and ex-pugilist, aged 27. was charged with assault. Through Mr. Fennell, McDonald pleaded guilty under provocation. Sub-Inspector Shanahan said that at 5.40 p.m. on Saturday, McGeehan was in the public bar of a City hotel. McDonald went across and struck complainant, who said he had no knowledge of why the assault was committed. McGeehau was hit five times altogether and did not retaliate. Mr. Fennell said that McDonald had put down a 10s note and McGeehan took the change. His client intended to lay a charge of theft in connection with the change. Mr. Hunt: McDonald has already been up twice on similar charges. Sub-Inspector Shanahan said that as far as the police were concerned tnere was no question of trouble about change. Mr. Hunt: Well, he gets 14 days. Mr. Fennell protested at the sentence and said he did not have a chance to cross-examine the witness. “You pleaded guilty,” said Mr. Hunt. “I ask for reconsideration of the sentence,” said counsel. Mr. Hunt: Your man has a list, anyway. Counsel said he thought that more leniency should be shown. “He can't behave himself,” said Mr. Hunt, who repeated his decision.
