ROAD WORKS DEFERRED ONE SCHEME TO PROCEED No additional unemployment relief works are to bo authorised at present by the Takapuna Borough Council, even though supported by a Government subsidy. The maximum that can be raised by a loan without increasing the rates is .€1,500, and it is considered by the Mayor, Mr. J. W. Williamson, that the times Will not permit an increase. Past experience of the council has shown that not more than 50 per cent, efficiency is possible with relief workers. The council, will, however, support the scheme for spending €5,000 on relief work at Milford in the construction of a lagoon on the Wairau estuary, the council’s share of actual disbursements being only £ 50. Thi« course was decided on at a special meeting of the council this week, when a comprehensive report dealing with suggested street works was submitted by the acting-engineer, Mr. J. Bodle. Only one item, involving an expenditure of .€4BO, for the surfacing in bitumen of the bus terminus a 1 Sherriff’s Bridge, was adopted. The other schemes deferred include the concreting of Walters’ 1-1 ill between Takapuna and Devonport at a cost of £2.271. and a total expenditure of €7,537 for the surfacing in bitumen of Taharoto Road, Milford Road, King Edward Avenue, Northcote Road, Shakespeare Road, Sherriff’s Hill and llurstmere Road.
