KILLED AT CROSSING
TRAIN KNOCKS DOWN ELDERLY MAN MOUNT ALBERT ACCIDENT Fatal injuries were caused to Mr, ; Robert Dunstan, when he was struck j by a train at a pedestrian railway j crossing at Lloyd's Avenue West, i Mount Albert, at 4.40 p.m. yesterday. ! Mr. Dunstan, who suffered from deafj ness and defective eyesight, was 77 j years old-, and lived at 35 Sussex i Street, Grey Lynn. | The train had not gathered speed j after a stop at the Mount Albert j station, but neither the driver nor ; the fireman saw Mr. Dunstan, who | was thrown by the cow-catcher about I six feet to the right hand side of the | engine. The train stopped within 150 yards. The victim of the accident was taken to the Morningside railway station, where Dr. T. H. Pettit found | life extinct. Severe head injuries j had been inflicted. I Mr. Dunstan was returning to his I home in Grey Lynn after visiting some j friends in Mount Albert. He left there lat about 4.30 o’clock and was reI crossing the railway line to board a ' tram froin the Mount Albert terminus. There is no warning bell at the pedes- | trian crossing, although the “wig-wag” signal at the Gladstone Road traffic crossing 100 yards away was audible. The train left Swanson at 3.53 p.m., and was travelling toward Newmarket. Mr. Dunstan had lived in Auckland for more than 20 years, and was formerly a miner at Thames. He is survived by his wife and an adult family of three sons and one daughter.
