STAKES FOR RACING AVONDALE J.C. WILL NOT REDUCE No further reduction in stake money is to be made next season, said Mr. Donald McLeod in his presidential address to members of the Avondale Jockey Club this afternoon. Mr. McLeod paid tribute tu the excellent services to racing rendered by tho lato Sir George Clifford, whose loss was greatly deplored. ■ In connection with the report and balance-sheet,” ho said, * I have pleasure in congratulating members on the racing and financial standpoint both tho spring and autumn meetings were successful, the racing especially reaching a high standard, the class of horse competing representing the very best in New Zealand. “Your committee has not by an> means lost sight of the necessity for improved accommodation for their patrons, and hope in the near future to be able to proceed with the scheme already mapped out. “You win be pleased to learn that it has been decided not to make any further reduction in stakes. The Guineas has been cut down £250, bringing it into uniformity with tlie other classic races, but this amount would bo distributed over the other events, making the total amount to be given away the same as last year, which was well over the total required by tho rules of racing. “It is interesting to note that tlie entries already received for the classic events for the forthcoming season are over the average, which practically guarantees good fields and high-class racing. “To further provide for the various classes of horses vour committee has deleted the Members’ Handicap from the spring meeting and substituted tin Champion Hack Plate, with set weights and allowances and a sweepstake at the post, hack conditions, and in the autumn the Oakley Handicap has been substituted by a two-year-old race under hack conditions. These alterations should be appreciated by owners. “The continued success of New Zea-land-bred horses in Australia is creating a big demand for our bloodstock, and. commercially, this is of benefit to the country and a good advertisement. for the Dominion as a breeding centre.”
