ROSKILL PARK CONTROL
VESTED IN THE CROWN At a. meeting of the Mount Roskill Road Board on Tuesday it was stated that Roskill Park was still private property, and that no action with regard to equipping the children’s playground in the park can be taken until the land is conveyed to the board. Concerning this statement, Mr. Bruce Scott, solicitor for Mr. George Winstone, donor of the park, writes: “It is necessary to correct an erroneous impression arising out of the report of the meeting of the Mount Roskill Road Board, where it was stated that Roskill Park is still private property. The park, comprising an area of 22 acres 38 perches, including Mount Roskill, was donated by Mr. George Winstone to the public last year. It was actually vested in the Crown by the deposit of plan 22526 in February last. “Tliere is statutory provision for the Governor-General by Order-in-Council to appoint the local authority to be a domain board having control of any public domain. “In this case, there is every reason to believe that the Mount Roskill Road Board will avail itself of this provision and will apply to the Governor-in-Council for the necessary authority. Until this is done, the Crown and not the domain board has control. “Mr. Winstone has expressed the wish to see portion of the area equipped as a children’s playground. It was his anxiety to see this work put in hand at once that made him ask the question which led to the remark that the area was still private property. There can be no doubt that the area is public property vested in the Crown, but it should soon come under the control of the local authority as a domain board when the proper representations aro made to the Governor-in-Council.”
