CREW FOR EMPIRE GAMES
TRAINING AT WANGANUI DISAPPOINTING PROGRESS Press Association WANGANUI, Today. The rowing crew to represent New Zealand at the Empire Games continues to do solid work on the river. Though the eight has been together for more than a week, the critics are somewhat disappointed with its showing. Jn the earlier stages of training the rowing was ragged, but changes were then being made daily in the personnel. It was hoped when the final selection was made that rapid improvement would bo shown, but many faults are still noticeable, and the view is expressed by local rowing experts that the coach will have a hard task to mould the crew into a combination comparable with other crews which have represented the Dominion with success overseas. The long slow work indulged in until Monday had a tendency to make the men more sluggish, but faster rows over shorter courses are now the order, and this should brighten up the rowing and bring about a much-needed improvement. The oarsmen finish up i their training here on Sunday and j leave that night for Auckland to catch I the Aorangi, sailing for Vancouver on ' Tuesday.
