LAUNCH WRECKED

DRIVEN ASHORE IN STORM Driven ashore at Murray’s Bay in a storm last week, the launch Clematis was pounded by heavy seas against a shingle barge moored near the shore. The vessel, which is now a battered wreck, dragged her anchor in the storm. The Clematis had towed two barges of blue metal from Oakley Creek, Avondale, and while the master was ashore superintending the unloading of the metal, a strong easterly sprang up, bringing in heavy breakers. The master endeavoured to reach the launch in a punt, but it was swamped immediately by the seas. Communication to Auckland brought a launch to assist the distressed vessel, but it was too late. The Clematis was owned by W. R. Rope, Ltd., was 30ft long and fitted with a powerful oil engine.
