MUNICIPAL MUSIC

BAND, ORGAN, AND CHOIR WEEK-END PROGRAMMES Pleasing variety was contained in the programme presented by the Municipal Choir at the Town Hall on Saturday evening. Under the direction of Mr. Maughan Barnett, the city organist, the choir opened nicely with Byrd’s “I Thought That Love,” followed by “In These Delightful, Pleasant Groves,” by Purcell. Both were well sung. Fine tonal effects were achieved in Gounod’s “Come Unto Him,” which was well- handled. For contrast the choir followed with Balfour Gardiner’s arrangement of “Sir Eglamare.’ and the Scottish cradle song. “O Con Ye Sew Cushions.’* arranged by Granville Ban took. The choir’s final number “Here's Health Unto His Majesty,” sung with fine verve and spirit. Pianoforte solos by Mr. Cyril Tousey were very well received. RafTs ‘‘Komanco and Minuet” and Chopin's “Nocturne in C Minor” were artistic contributions, and the encore numbers, “Humoresque,” by Mr. Maughan Barnett, and a number by McDowell were also popular. Miss Sarah Stacpoole sang very pleasingly “Ships That Pass in th Night” and “Morning” by Oley Speak, and an encore number. “The Fairy’s Lullaby.” Organ solos by Mr. Maughan Barnett were also warmly appreciated, particularly the the popular “Toccata.” of Boellmann’s and Bendel’s “Wild Rose.” Mr. Leo AVhitaker played the accompaniments with his usual artistry.
