GIFTS TO WAR MUSEUM

MEDALS AND PLAQUES A number of interesting gifts have been added to the collection of historical medals in the Auckland War Memorial Museum. A prominent acquisition is a finely-executed medal, engraved by F. Bowker in 1911, commemorating a notable portrait of Shakespeare, which is in the possession of Mr. W. Sharp Ogden. The medal, which was presented to the museum by Mrs. M. R. Tweedie, of Remuera, a niece of Mr. Ogden, bears on its reverse side a profile of the Stratford bust of Shakespeare. A medal commemorative of the cap- | ture of Portobello in 1769, given by ! Mr. G. Forsythe, and an Armistice medal, presented by Mr. Moss Davis, are other additions. A relic of the days when "sweating” of coins was pactised, is a sovereign balance, used to test the weight of coins, which has been presented by Mr. A. J. Dennis, of Avondale. The evolution of weighing is excellently depicted in a series of 34 historical pictures presented by W. and T. Avery. The pictures show the different types of weighing machines in vogue in the different periods.
