ALPINE SPORTS CLUB ARRANGES PLEASANT SOCIAL

INTERESTING LECTURETTE BY PROFESSOR ALGIE Mr. and Mrs. F. E. du Guerrier were host and hostess at the pleasant social evening held by the Alpine Sports Club in the ballroom. Omahu Road, Remucra, last evening. A large number of members and guests attended and thoroughly enjoyed the programme arranged for their entertainment by the social committee. An interesting: lecturette on winter sports in different countries was given bv Professor R. M. Algie, the president of the club, who spoke particularly of ski-ing. Although we are accustomed to think of Switzerland as the home of winter sports, ski-ing, said the professor, really originated in Norway and Sweden, where it was used as a means of travelling from one place to another. The characteristics of ski-ing differed according to the nature of the country. For instance, great speed is attained in the precipitous mountains of Switzerland. while in Norway, where the country is very undulating, the skis are very long and the progress rather slower. Winter sports are becoming more and more popular each year, said the speaker, who considered ski-ing to be the most interesting of all winter sports. Skis were first uged in New Zealand on Ruapehu in 1913. A musical programme, including items by Miss Verner Wishart, Mr. Geoffrey Laird and Mr. Ronald Muston followed, and then dancing and bridge passed the remainder of the evening.
