CASES FOR N.Z. FRUIT

BOUGHT IN AMERICA EXPLANATION OF ACTION Press Association NAPIER, Today. Hawke’s Bay Fruitgrowers present at a meeting in Hastings yesterday were surprised to learn from Mr. T. C. Brash, president of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation, that the federation bought last year from the United States, which excludes our fruit, nearly half the number of cases in which this season's export fruit is being sent abroad. Explaining the federation’s action, iVL-r. Brash said it had been faced with the prospect of a substantial increase in the cost of fruit cases, and it was found they could be bought in Seattle at only a farthing dearer than last year’s price. Canadian mill-owners, who had had steady orders for some years, evidently thought they had matters all their own way, and last year sent out a good deal of shoddy material so that it would not do them any harm to receive a rebuff. The federation was making inquiries about the desirability of buying cases from Sweden or Norway.
