“BLOT ON LANDSCAPE”

DEMOLITION OF NEWTON WEST SCHOOL URGED NEW BUILDING WANTED The condition of the Newton West School ‘was strongly condemned and the need of a new building stressed at the annual meeting of the Auckland Primary Schools’ Committees’ Association last evening. The subject was raised by a remit from the Newton committee urging the Education Department to demolish the Newton West School and erect an up-to-date building. The present building had been standing over 50 years, and was in a terrible condition, it was stated. The main entrance fronted on to a busy thoroughfare, and already there had been a fatal accident there, and another child had been rescued by the headmaster recently. The suggestion was made that if a new building were erected the main entrance should be situated in another street about a block from the present ingress. “It is certainly a blot on the landscape,” agreed Mr. C. J. Dovegrove. The remit was referred to the executive for consideration, it being pointed out that other schools might have equally good claims to new buildings. A committee, comprising the chairman, vice-chairman, and secretary, was appointed to confer with the Education Board and report back on the position of the old Newton East School, which, though condemned, was stated to have been reopened and was being used as a school for the deaf.
