POWER FOR INDUSTRY
MANUFACTURERS ANXIOUS APPEAL TO CONSUMERS Auckland manufacturers are anxious that an alternative supply to that of Arapuni should be made available at an early date, and to this end have written to the Prime Minister asking what steps are being taken and what time will elapse before such a supply would be available. This letter was authorised at a special meeting of the executive of the Auckland Manufacturers’ Association. The executive pointed out that an ample and continuous supply of electricity was essential for the manufacturing activities of the province. At the same time it was made clear that no criticism of Arapuni was intended, and the hope was expressed that the present difficulty would be overcome. The present trouble was urged as showing the need for an alternative supply. An offer of assistance if required was contained in a letter to the Auckland Electric-Power Board congratulating members on the prompt and satisfactory manner in which the present situation has been met. The steps taken to maintain a supply in face of the emergency were considered by the executive, which decided to get into touch with all members, and to ask them to conserve power wherever possible. The following appeal for economy was sent to members: "The most difficult time for the board is when the peak load for trans- ! port and domestic purposes is car- ! ried, between 4 p.m. and 7.30 p.m.,” | states the circular. "The executive I feels that a great deal can be done !by manufacturers to ease this load by a little foresight and organisation. Much of the heavy work of lifts, etc., can be a.rranged earlier in the day, and in dozens of ways by loyal co-opera-tion we can help the board to carry us over an awkward period without appreciable dislocation. The executive, therefore, confidently relies on you. in the interests of the community as a whole, to do all in your power to minij mise the load after 4 p.m. until such time as the ordinary supply of current i is again available.”
