ENGINEERING TRADES

DISPUTE BEFORE COURT IN CHRISTCHURCH EMPLOYMENT OF WOMEN Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Today. , A Dominion dispute that came before the Arbitration Court today was listened to by many witnesses and others interested in the engineering' and allied trades. The employers in the engineering trade asked that the award be amended in various directions, one suggested new clause covering the employment of women. At the outset, for the unions, Mr. It. J. Barter objected to any review of the award whatever. He said the court had no jurisdiction to amend the award unless the unions consented to the review. Mr. T. O. Bishop, for the employers, said the Court had full power to deal with the application under the Arbitration Act and the employers were within their rights in coming before the Court. The Court retired and later Mr. Justice Frazer said the Court had power to amend the award under the special conditions laid down when the present award was made. The objection of the unions therefore was not sustained. (Proceeding.)
